Summary

At the start of it all, Jonathan Pine is merely the night manager at a luxury hotel。 But when a single attempt to pass on information to the British authorities - about an international businessman at the hotel with suspicious dealings - backfires terribly, and people close to Pine begin to die, he commits himself to a battle against powerful forces he cannot begin to imagine。

In a chilling tale of corrupt intelligence agencies, billion-dollar price tags and the truth of the brutal arms trade, John le Carre creates a claustrophobic world in which no one can be trusted。

Gave up after 100 pages。 Extremely unlikeable

I can't quite believe that I am giving a Le Carre novel a 2-star rating。 I usually like his work a great deal。 But this one just fell flat for me。 Much of the problem stems from the fact that the book felt bloated and over-written。 The prose itself is fine, but a fair amount of it could have been cut or condensed, which in turn would have helped pick up the pace。 Simply put, a lot of it plods, especially in the first half。 My second issue is that I never really liked the protagonist, and eventua I can't quite believe that I am giving a Le Carre novel a 2-star rating。 I usually like his work a great deal。 But this one just fell flat for me。 Much of the problem stems from the fact that the book felt bloated and over-written。 The prose itself is fine, but a fair amount of it could have been cut or condensed, which in turn would have helped pick up the pace。 Simply put, a lot of it plods, especially in the first half。 My second issue is that I never really liked the protagonist, and eventually started to find him quite unbelievable。 In fact, there are quite a few other characters of whom the same could be said。Then there's the 1960s approach to women, whose lissome grace and beauty are reiterated ad nauseam。 They differ only in terms of which bad boy they 'belong' to。As a side note, I started watching the film version starring Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie。 Nope。 Even they couldn't pull it off。 (In fairness, I haven't watched all the way to the end。 Maybe that would change my mind。 But given the material they're working with, I doubt it。) 。。。more

I wanted to read this before watching the show。 I wasn’t at all impressed by the writing but like the plot。

As usual we have personable characters, despicable characters, intricate situations and plans, fueled by happenstance and a sense of honor that's more than merely unusual The nature of Le Carré's work is such that to divulge any more detail is to blow the whole game。 It starts in one place, ends up in another, and works it's way around painstakingly, with more obstacles than I was nearly able to cope with as a reader。 But in a remarkably good way。 As usual we have personable characters, despicable characters, intricate situations and plans, fueled by happenstance and a sense of honor that's more than merely unusual The nature of Le Carré's work is such that to divulge any more detail is to blow the whole game。 It starts in one place, ends up in another, and works it's way around painstakingly, with more obstacles than I was nearly able to cope with as a reader。 But in a remarkably good way。 。。。more

At atmospheric thriller novel about the arms trade and spies。This book isn't perfect。 At times it felt too complex, and at others the pace wasn't quite right, but overall it is an enjoyable, exciting and tension filled book with well drawn characters that come to life off the page。 The intensity in the that builds throughout the book to its conclusion adds to the excitement。I would definitely recommend this book。 At atmospheric thriller novel about the arms trade and spies。This book isn't perfect。 At times it felt too complex, and at others the pace wasn't quite right, but overall it is an enjoyable, exciting and tension filled book with well drawn characters that come to life off the page。 The intensity in the that builds throughout the book to its conclusion adds to the excitement。I would definitely recommend this book。 。。。more

I greatly enjoyed this one, though it was a bit slow to start。 After a 100, maybe 150 pages it really picked up the pace and kept me enthralled。 le Carré was an unmistakably gifted writer, and his prose pulls me in and wows me on nearly every page。 By the end, I genuinely cared about Pine, and the rest of the "good guys," and part of me was sad to reach the end。 The only reason I give this book 4 stars is that some of Pine's obsession with Jed is。。。hard to take。 In hindsight, some of it makes mo I greatly enjoyed this one, though it was a bit slow to start。 After a 100, maybe 150 pages it really picked up the pace and kept me enthralled。 le Carré was an unmistakably gifted writer, and his prose pulls me in and wows me on nearly every page。 By the end, I genuinely cared about Pine, and the rest of the "good guys," and part of me was sad to reach the end。 The only reason I give this book 4 stars is that some of Pine's obsession with Jed is。。。hard to take。 In hindsight, some of it makes more sense, because of certain aspects of his background you learn as you read。 At the same time, I found it hard to take, as I found it hard to take how Pine had that unrealistic Bond quality where everyone who has a thing for men has it *bad* for him。 Considering how le Carré started writing because he found the James Bond books laughable, I'm surprised he gave Pine such a Bond-like quality of being unreasonably attractive to everyone。 I can see the purpose it played in the plot of the story, but even so。。。it just didn't hit quite right。 Even so, this was still one of the best books I've read in a long time。 。。。more

I didn't really find le Carré's somewhat staccato writing style particularly enjoyable to read, though the plot was engaging enough for me to persevere。 Overall a decent read。 I didn't really find le Carré's somewhat staccato writing style particularly enjoyable to read, though the plot was engaging enough for me to persevere。 Overall a decent read。 。。。more

I have read several spy thrillers by John LeCarre recently and this one was a good investment of time。 The Night Manager" is a tale of post cold war espionage where money laundering and drug smuggling draw the focus of British and US intelligence attention。 Jonathon Pine is a night manager at a hotel in Europe。 The love of his life is dead and he blames himself。 He is vulnerable to recruitment by British intelligence and becomes a spy charged with infiltrating the criminal empire of Richard Rope I have read several spy thrillers by John LeCarre recently and this one was a good investment of time。 The Night Manager" is a tale of post cold war espionage where money laundering and drug smuggling draw the focus of British and US intelligence attention。 Jonathon Pine is a night manager at a hotel in Europe。 The love of his life is dead and he blames himself。 He is vulnerable to recruitment by British intelligence and becomes a spy charged with infiltrating the criminal empire of Richard Roper。 Pine develops his identity as an unassuming hotel employee who maintains the confidentiality of guests。 Pine saves the life of the son of his adversary who invites him to stay at his palatial compound。 This is an interesting plot twist as Pine circulates within Roper's inner circle until he is identified as a British intelligence plant。 His life descends into a dystopian nightmare as he is tortured。 Yes, the book is long (560 pages) and some scenes seem irrelevant to the story, but Le Carre always ties the appropriate knots。 I thought the ending was a bit contrived, but overall I enjoyed the story。 The writing as usual is terrific prose。 。。。more

Early on I commented that I might have enjoyed the miniseries more than the book。 Although there are many scenes from the book lifted for TV, on the whole I think this is an altogether different story。 This is the first le Carré novel I have read, and I found the writing itself mesmerizing even when the plot dragged。 Which it did from time to time。 Nonetheless, I enjoyed the read。

Digital edition。Man, I have loved a leCarre in my time, but this was a sodden disappointment。 If I hadn't watched the *excellent miniseries with Tom Hiddleston as Pine, I'd never have made it through the book。I will admit that to facilitate getting through, I skipped all the stuff that didn't have The Hotelier in it。 Yup, spying is boring and bureaucratic and involves a lot of talking to get anything done。 Point well taken, author。 Now let me return to the man in the field。And what the actual he Digital edition。Man, I have loved a leCarre in my time, but this was a sodden disappointment。 If I hadn't watched the *excellent miniseries with Tom Hiddleston as Pine, I'd never have made it through the book。I will admit that to facilitate getting through, I skipped all the stuff that didn't have The Hotelier in it。 Yup, spying is boring and bureaucratic and involves a lot of talking to get anything done。 Point well taken, author。 Now let me return to the man in the field。And what the actual heck happened at the end? Top drawer thriller from the master。 Perhaps no longer bang up to date, but lies and deception are surely eternal。 Different in content, but same in spirit as the excellent BBC adaptation。 Enjoy both。

If you listen close enough you can just hear Le Carre’s agent saying “write a james bond novel, why dontcha?”

Usually I find a book superior to any screen adaptations, but The Night Manager is a rare exception to this rule。 It was a tightly plotted page-turner along the way, but the ending felt rushed and unsatisfying。 I also found many of the characters—especially women—two dimensional or lacking in character development。 Do yourself a favor and watch the enjoyable and brilliantly cast miniseries instead。 It follows the plot but expands on the source material to bring the story full circle in a way tha Usually I find a book superior to any screen adaptations, but The Night Manager is a rare exception to this rule。 It was a tightly plotted page-turner along the way, but the ending felt rushed and unsatisfying。 I also found many of the characters—especially women—two dimensional or lacking in character development。 Do yourself a favor and watch the enjoyable and brilliantly cast miniseries instead。 It follows the plot but expands on the source material to bring the story full circle in a way that feels logical and fulfilling。 。。。more

DNF。 i dont even know why i keep trying to read le carre。 i understand its not a thriller。 its about the espionage and the spycraft。 cool。 neat。 whoever reads and enjoys his books are the most patient people alive and can read pages upon pages of nothing。 i also had no idea what was happening half the time or who was significant to the story。 so many timeline jumps and flashbacks。

The Night Manager is one of the least demanding reads among John le Carrè’s body of work。 The reader is not asked here to climb rugged hills of overwrought prose before seeing the land of milk and honey like in The Honourable Schoolboy or A Perfect Spy。 And, the same way we - le Carré junkies - moan and whine when we get it, so we complain when we miss such hardship。 This was almost an easy read and, paradoxically, that takes out some of the fun。The plot in itself is nothing special and it bring The Night Manager is one of the least demanding reads among John le Carrè’s body of work。 The reader is not asked here to climb rugged hills of overwrought prose before seeing the land of milk and honey like in The Honourable Schoolboy or A Perfect Spy。 And, the same way we - le Carré junkies - moan and whine when we get it, so we complain when we miss such hardship。 This was almost an easy read and, paradoxically, that takes out some of the fun。The plot in itself is nothing special and it brings with it some reminiscence of The Little Drummer Girl, like a déjà-vu: once again it’s all about the perfect infiltration through the perfect legend。 I would add that the plausibility of the final trick is less than totally sound as the bluff could be easily called。What saves the day are the juicy depictions of the power plays in the Whitehall corridors, where we even find - and that’s a first - one of its mandarins in the armour of the white knight。 。。。more

I love John Le Carré as an author。 This probably wasn’t my favourite of his books - the ending kept me gripped but wasn’t as satisfying as some of his others。 I’m also a sucker for Cold War spy novels so the post-Cold War setting took some getting used to。 All in all though, another complex, twisty, evocative novel from the master。

If someone were to ask whether The Night Manager was a good book, I wouldn’t know what to tell them。 It is a magnificent piece of work, but I have rather ambivalent feelings about it。 The prose is exquisite。 Le Carré was a real-life British spy and the world of espionage, intrigue, and secret services is rendered in staggering detail。 However, therein lies the problem。 The story is buried in details that are often completely irrelevant; the storytelling is often so pedantic and obsessive (and sl If someone were to ask whether The Night Manager was a good book, I wouldn’t know what to tell them。 It is a magnificent piece of work, but I have rather ambivalent feelings about it。 The prose is exquisite。 Le Carré was a real-life British spy and the world of espionage, intrigue, and secret services is rendered in staggering detail。 However, therein lies the problem。 The story is buried in details that are often completely irrelevant; the storytelling is often so pedantic and obsessive (and slow) that one longs for the likes of Hugo or Melville。 On top of that, the story kind of "fizzes out" and has no clear ending, which might be realistic, but it is also extremely frustrating。 。。。more

The show is definitely better。 Weirdly enough。 It is a well written book, if a bit overwritten。 The story is great。 Exciting and complex。 Trust no one。The show updated the timeline and modernized it。 The story is trimmed to to keep the momentum which was for the better。
